Sleepy Saturday

Well, I think we can almost officially call this Fall now! The leaves are turning, the weather is cooler (at least in the morning and evening hours), Starbucks have Pumpkin Spice lattes back…IT IS FALL!!

I’m so excited because I think this is becoming my favorite time of year. Unfortunately, I’m not a big fan of winter but perhaps I can be creative this year and find a way to enjoy that season more too 😉

So, where to begin! Oh yeah, let’s start with how Friday went down…

Breakfast was plain oat bran with banana and almond butter. The jar is almost empty so you know what that means…oats in a jar soon!

Then mid morning I snacked on more banana and PB after a 15 minute walk (this was half, the banana from this morning was huge):

For lunch, I had one of my favorite vegan convenience meals!

I don’t want to become dependent on these but it got me through this time 😉

YUM! Just as good the second time around…

After lunch digested, I went to the gym for a 40 minute treadmill workout with Farrah. We did walking and running intervals until we reached 3 miles…went something like this – 5 min walking warm up (2.5 mph), Run 5 minutes (5.5 mph), Walk 2.5 minutes (3.8 mph) – repeat run/walk sequence 4 times – cool down walking for 5 minutes. In the run sequences I did 6.0 for the last minute a few times.

It was awesome! I felt like I could’ve pushed it more but I didn’t because I want to honor my body and not reach those limits as I’m not a competitive athlete or anything. My body thanked me by not being sore and I wasn’t too tired either.

Snacks were some REAL dark chocolate (no milkfat in this piece):

Some almonds…

For dinner, I convinced Josh to go to Shalimar, a really great Indian restaurant here in town. I ordered what I’ve seen Gina eat several times…Baingan Bartha!

I had mine over some rice with garlic naan on the side. I think this dish was vegan, no? It was just peas, eggplant and sauce I think. Geez, it was so good. I ate most of it, but not all.

Even though I felt pregnant (with a food baby) for the next couple of hours, I still managed to eat a serving of ice cream (not vegan trying to use it up):

Then we watched a couple of bad movies (The Mummy Dragon Emperor something or other, dumb and Valkyrie which wasn’t too bad actually) and I snacked on two sheets of graham crackers (these need to leave my house like now) and a couple of marshmallows.

Then I had some tea and went to bed 🙂 Zzzzz…

Hello Saturday!

For breakfast, I had two very non-vegan Eggo waffles with PB and banana. I decided to have fun and make a waffle-wich!

On a Pokemon plate no less. Haha. Close up of the yummy goodness…

On the way to meet my mom for a nice walk at the park with Suzie, I grabbed a tall soy latte from the ‘Bucks. It was tasty…I think there soy latte feels like a treat even though it’s fairly low in calories! I resisted the pumpkin spice latte for now 😉

At the park, we walked around the track twice which is about 2.4 miles, plus walking to and from the car, we got a good workout in! So did my silly dog.

For lunch, we went to Mimi’s Cafe, which is easily my favorite restaurant. While perusing the menu though, I couldn’t help but think how hard it would be for a vegan to eat there.

I ended up getting the veggie burger with fresh fruit. I only used half the bun as it was huge and not even close to whole grain.

This was pretty good and definitely filled me up. But I can’t eat veggie burgers all the time…

I think I might write to the company…not to complain, but just to find out their suggestions for vegan menu options. Other that a garden salad with no dressing…that’s what I’m finding on the websites out there – that’s not a meal!

I also had some delicious unsweetened raspberry tea 🙂

Before I went grocery shopping, I popped a piece of real dark chocolate. Now that I am back home, I’m thinking it is time for a nap. I’m going out with some girls to Ramsi’s tonight…I see falafel in my future…and it is beautious!

Have a great day friends!

Up with the dog

It never fails that when we have a late night out, the dog still decides to get up earlier than I would have even if I hadn’t been out all night! We got home around 2:30 this morning and Suzie thought it was time to go out at 7, even though I took her for a quick walk when we got home, ugh. But I love her…I mean, look how cute she is 🙂

Yeah, she’s taking a nap right now. I’m making coffee!

Updated to add: I feel like such a jerk for writing about how cute my dog is now that I’ve read of Meghann’s loss. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time. My heart is breaking for her, I can’t imagine…

I ended up having breakfast for dinner last night because it as the only thing on my mind. I thought long and hard about veggies, hummus and other things I could make but nothing else would do.

Sometimes you just gotta go with what you are feeling! Plus some chocolate chips thrown in for good measure 😉

Last night, we went out to a small bar to see our friend Chad’s band and it was great. It took a medium coffee with skim milk to get me there but once it got going, I didn’t even notice how late it was. I also had a glass of Chardonnay while I was there. I’ve decided wine is the only thing I really like to drink, so when I want something and it is available, it’s great.

I wore more eye make up last night than I have in YEARS (if ever)…

Since I had my normal breakfast for dinner last night, I decided to switch it up for breakfast this morning. I made an omelet with 2 eggs and red pepper, mushrooms and green pepper, topped with 2% cheese and a squirt of organic ketchup. Two slices of whole wheat toast made this meal complete.

The coffee is done percolating…hope you all have a lovely Sunday!

p.s. It was probably totally wrong of me, but while I was grocery shopping yesterday I saw a box of Coffee Mate creamers and on the front of the box it says “0 grams of trans fat” but when you turn the box over, you see “Partially Hydrogenated Oil” high up on the ingredients list — which I knew already but I had never noticed the labeling on the front — I had a pen in my hand since I was checking things off my list and decided to write “lies” right on the front of the box. Crap like that drives me crazy…they are taking advantage of people.

The "Kong" toy phenomenon

Ok, gonna post about the dog’s food now, so if you don’t care, you don’t have to read this 🙂

Today, I have been a dog owner for 1 week and I already feel like I have learned quite a bit! We have been able to get our dog house trained, crate trained and mostly over her separation anxiety.
But a whole lot of thanks is due to the Kong toy we purchased for her after having them recommended to us by the Humane Society we adopted her from.
My first thoughts were…”What the heck is a kong?” Lol. I thought of Donkey Kong, King Kong, thinking it would be some kind of gorilla or something.

Kongs are actually rubber toys that can hold food, treats and other fillings, that can then be given to your dog to “work on” that keeps them entertained and enjoying a treat at the same time!

We bought one of these for Suzie and she just loves it! Per the size chart, we got the medium, which cost us $7.99 at Kroger. For an additional cost, you can also purchase “filling” for the Kongs, which comes in Liver and Peanut Butter flavor and resembles a Cheez-wiz can.

The first day, we mixed her regular food with a little bit of canned dog food, then the past two days I have mixed her food with a spoonful of peanut butter or plain yogurt, which are both safe for dogs.

With the latter two, I put the stuff in there the night before and place it in the freezer for a nice frozen treat after our morning walk. It also keeps her distracted that mom is about to leave for work 😉

We are still having a little bit of trouble getting her to eat all of her food in her bowl, so this has helped with that too. After our great experience with this toy so far, I recommended them to a guy at work who just got a new puppy…but of course he’s already heard of it! These toys are some kind of dog phenomenon!

Just wanted to share some of my dog’s food news too, thanks for checking it out!

Update: Here is a picture of Suzie with her Kong!

See Suzie Eat

Since we got Suzie on Election Day, she has eaten very little because she’s still a little nervous and adjusting to her new surroundings. But I’m happy to report that last night she dug in and finished off her bowl of food! Mama is so relieved 😉

Yesterday, I had two BIG cups of coffee with Splenda and Silk soymilk in one of my all-time favorite mugs…

My mid-morning snack was a Pure Protein bar in Chocolate Peanut Butter. This is one of my favorites that has not yet been featured on See Sarah Eat. I first tried this before walking a 5K a few weeks back and it was great! So here it is for you to see now…

I am in LOVE with the Pure Protein bars. I have now tried every (known to me) flavor and can properly rank them in the order I like them:
1. Peanut Marshmallow Eclipse (or Pure Cloud of Heaven as I like to call it)
2. Blueberry Crumbcake
3. Chocolate Peanut Butter
4. Strawberry Shortcake
5. Chocolate Deluxe
6. S’mores
7. Chewy chocolate chip

Yesterday for exercise, I decided just to attend a yoga class and I am so glad I did! I got some really great and deep stretches in and I felt totally relaxed when I left. I noticed last night that I was even a little bit sore from holding my arms up during the “warrior” poses 😉 I love yoga.

When I got back it was high time for lunch, I was ready! I heated up some leftover tofu-asian veggie stir fry from Wednesday night…

And I also had some plain Wallaby nonfat yogurt mixed with 1 tbsp cherry preserves and topped with 1 tbsp of walnuts. This combo wasn’t the greatest, I much prefer mixing the yogurt with pumpkin butter — the preserves didn’t mix well and it wasn’t very sweet.

Here are the preserves I used…I got this at a flea market a while back and it’s been in the fridge forever! I like that it’s organic and made with real fruit.

Later on in the afternoon, I had a tangerine, my last one! Time to get some more 😉

Then even later on, I had a mozzarella cheesestick and a gala apple…

We ended up having dinner with my family and this time they chose Shane’s Rib Shack. I didn’t even object because I know that I can pretty much make any restaurant work for me. I was amazed at the choices! They had at least 3 salads that I wanted to try and lots of other options other than barbecue, ribs and sandwiches. I was impressed.
Since it was my first time there, I went the safe route, with a chargrilled chicken salad and a packet of light ranch dressing on the side…I love that this salad DID NOT come with croutons — I didn’t even have to ask!

The chicken was moist, tender and flavorful…sometimes when you get a grilled chicken salad it can be very bland. I also liked that there was lightly sprinkled cheddar cheese and not a big glob of it. You can tell the tomatoes are not in season but I ate them anyway, they weren’t too bad. I enjoyed this salad a lot, but I think I was most impressed by the fact that they offer Coke Zero on tap, woo hoo!

When we got home, I laid on the couch with the dog for a while (falling asleep, watching Heavy: The Story of Metal with dad) and then felt an urge of hunger come on (about 3 hours after dinner), so I had a spoonful of peanut butter out of the jar!

Then, me and Suzie went for a walk and afterward my stomach still felt empty, so I drank some water, then decided to make some low calorie/fat free hot cocoa with light whipped topping.

It was a good day! Hope yours was too 🙂

Suzie Q

Yesterday was an amazing day! Not only did we elect the next President of the United States, but my husband and I adopted a new member of our family….a 3-year-old beagle named Suzie! We will always remember the day we got her now 🙂

We got up to vote in the morning and before we left, I had the other 1/2 of my Pumpkin Pie Clif bar, a tall glass of water and a multi-vitamin.

A couple hours later, we ended up eating breakfast out at one of my favorite places, Mimi’s Cafe! I ordered the low fat Fitness Omelette (egg whites, mushrooms, broccoli, tomatoes) which came with wheat toast (I only ate one slice) and usually OJ, but I subbed for some skim milk to put in my coffee!

They weren’t that busy but they were short-staffed and our service was not great. But we were patient, we had the day off, so we just took our time and waited. We ended up getting our meal for free though! I felt bad because we didn’t have any cash to leave a tip 😦

After our breakfast, we went home to gear up for dog-searching. We hadn’t really planned on actually getting a dog yesterday, we were just going to look and see what our options were. My husband was really set on a puppy but I kept telling him how important it is to adopt older dogs because not a lot of people want them. We went to two pet stores in town and were about to give up, when we decided to take a long drive out to the Humane Society.

We filled out a survey, went through the dog rooms and looked at a few dogs. One puppy was really cute but when we got her out she had no interest in us whatsoever. Then we walked down another aisle and this little beagle got up and poked her nose out at us. We took her out of the cage and played with her a little bit to see what she was like. You know how they say dogs pick their owners? Ha, Suzie definitely picked us. We were not leaving there without her! So now we are a family of three and couldn’t be happier 🙂

We were gone ALL DAY getting our dog and supplies, so by the time I got home, I was STARVING with a capital S, so I made a PB&J on whole wheat (using real cherry preserves instead of jelly) and it was heaven!

Then I had some mixed nuts as a snack before dinner…

Dinner was a nice thick pork chop and a huge side of broccoli. I added some mustard to my plate after I took this pic 😉

Dessert, as usual, my favorite sugar free chocolate pudding with light whipped topping 🙂

Since we stayed up later to watch all the Election coverage, I ended up having a nighttime snack of a gala apple and 1 tbsp peanut butter.

I ended up getting NO formal exercise yesterday but I did take Suzie for 2 walks around the neighborhood and we were running around all day, so I don’t feel too bad. I’ll pick it back up today for sure!

Hope everyone has been doing great, I can’t wait to catch up on your blogs!
