Even though I woke up to 12 degrees outside this morning, I made a smoothie for breakfast!
This smoothie contained 1 cup of rice milk, 1/2 cup frozen pineapple and 1 tbsp Sun Warrior protein powder. Unfortunately it was not very good but it’s all about figuring out the right combo.
The mini bagel with White Chocolate Wonderful was just lovely 🙂
Mid-morning, I snacked on some carrots and salsa. Can you tell I’m trying to use stuff up at home?
I didn’t take photos of lunch again because like yesterday, it’s just boring and today’s lunch was a carbon copy of last night’s dinner.
Before our run today, I snacked on a Larabar that happened to be the same color as the shirt I was wearing today 😉
After our run and on the way to a meeting, I knew it would be a while before I ate again so I tried these Luna snacks from my pantry.
These were not that good! I really like the pomegranate flavor but I just ate these for the calories. I will not get this flavor again.
After our half marathon training meeting, I came home to a new frozen pizza to try. No cheese!
It seemed a little skimpy on the veggies at first.
But looking at these pictures makes it seem like there was more on there than I initially noticed.
While I waited for the pizza to cool off, I started on a nice glass of iced tea. Summer, are you here yet?
For dinner, I had two slices of pizza with some broccoli and Smart Balance Light.
This meal hit the spot! I loved the crunchy crust of the pizza (I cooked mine an additional 2 minutes than the box said to do).
Take a good look…this is tomorrow’s lunch, ha ha ha.

Today it was much harder to listen to my body because I had quite a few distractions. I was busy at work and I keep thinking about all my upcoming plans this week for my birthday. And I seriously think I need a detox from Facebook (future challenge perhaps)!
This morning was easy. I knew I wanted yogurt + fruit, which usually doesn’t happen in the a.m. but I’ve been seeing everyone’s parfaits and I got jealous 😉 Plus it’s been warm here in KY and when I’m warm, I like to eat something cold.
Here’s what went in:
I am pleased that this fat free Stonyfield was thicker like the French vanilla. It must just be Stonyfield’s “lowfat” line that’s too runny to eat with a spoon!

The yogurt and granola were AMAZING! These flavors all went together so well and I was really pleased with my new breakfast even though it didn’t last me very long. I think making this with higher protein Greek yogurt would do the trick. But that granola kicks butt!
At work, I had my usual 1 cup of coffee and then I got pretty hungry for a mid-morning snack, just shy of mid-morning, haha. I’m listening to you body, okay?!
I broke into another new product Alex sent me all the way from California:

These were so good, I loved the flavor, they were like granola bites, only more dense and nuttier. Plus they’re cute 😉
These held me for a while, but I got ravenous just before 11:00, so I went ahead and ate lunch early (still listening)!
I had a can of Bumblebee Tuna (anyone else thinking of Ace Ventura 2 right now?) in spicy thai chili (sorry no pic) on a whole wheat English muffin and the Green Giant digestive health blend of veggies (yellow carrots, spinach, white beans).
I went for a 50 minute walk outside with some co-workers, which was nice because it was a day off from running and the sun was out after raining for nearly 7 straight days!
When I got back I was already hungry again (hmm) so I had another Alex goodie, a Luna Sunrise Bar!
I’d had this one before but its been years. I was really in the mood for chocolate so I didn’t go into it with the best mind set.
I liked the bar ok and the nutritionals are great, but its not going to be a favorite. I think I prefer the chocolate-y Luna bars even if they all do start to taste alike after a while. I still love though how this bar is designed with women’s health in mind. But it didn’t really rock my socks this time.
Unfortunately, after this, I stopped listening for a while. Or maybe not. But I had a bag of peanut butter M&M’s, a small one, haha. Like I said, hormones probably. No negativity here though! They were good.
When I got home and started up the oven for my dinner recipes, I munched on two carrots and finished off the container of Just Hummus, there were only a couple tbsps left anyway. Yum. I am really into fresh veggies right now, especially carrots and cucumbers. I also bought some kale that I’m ready to try now since I never have!

I’m nowhere near wanting dessert yet, so we’ll just wait and see what happens the rest of the night.
What I’ve learned today:
- Its okay to eat lunch early if I’m really hungry, no one will know but me!
- Eating smaller portions every 2-4 hours works great for me
- My biggest culprits to keeping calories/portions in check are boredom and dissatisfaction (i.e. Luna Bar today)
- I can get through two days without counting calories!
This is definitely a learning experience and one that I hope sticks with me beyond this week. Not counting calories definitely takes the stress out of eating healthy, which should be fun and adventurous! I am somewhat worried about putting on weight, but I have to remember to listen to my body both with diet and exercise, and finding that balance which will result in weight balance as well.
Back to The Biggest Loser!
After my easy workout yesterday and a great night’s sleep, I have NO PAIN today. Whatever it was that was bothering my leg and/or hips is completely gone. I told the husband last night when we went to bed that if I woke up in a lot of pain, it was time to get a new matress, haha. Guess that scared it off?
The Fage + Pumpkin + Almonds combo ended up being a really good snack yesterday afternoon, which I knew it would be…
Unfortunately, I got hungry for this at 1:00, so I was aching for another snack come 4. And also having a strange craving for some artificially sweetened cherry bubbles…
The bar was good, hadn’t had one of these in a while! But the diet wild cherry pepsi was BLECH! I used to LOVE these and while it tasted okay, it didn’t sit well with me. I’m pretty sure I got whatever that was out of my system. I will only compromise once in a blue moon for some Coke Zero. Everything else is crap 😉
I stopped at Whole Foods on the way home to pick up some much needed yogurt stash and some ingredients for the salad I made for girl’s night. My husband texted me while I was there asking for ketchup and cheese slices. I don’t think he realized I was at Whole Foods because he made a face when he saw “organic” cheese and 365 tomato ketchup in the fridge, haha. But once he tried them, he had no complaints. Plus, the price was pretty much the same as it would’ve been at Kroger. I’m thinking of switching over more purchases to WF. Hmm…

Ooh, I forgot about the Luna “cookie” and another package of Spirutein! I love the Chocolate PB stuff, can you tell?
Whole Foods has 3 lb bag of apples on sale for $1.99! And the Annie’s dressing was $2.50 🙂
While putting away groceries and making my salad, I got hungry AGAIN, so I had a spoonful of PB to hold me over.
And now the beautiful, colorful salad!
This huge bowl contained:
- 3-4 cups of spinach
- 2/3 of large cucumber (from above picture)
- Handful of mini carrots, chopped
- 1 Braeburn apple, cored and chopped
- 2 tbsp raisins
- 2 tbsp Annie’s light honey mustard vinaigrette dressing
I had some spinach left over which is good because I want to make another salad tomorrow night (we’re having pizza takeout from Papa Murphy’s) and perhaps a green monster is in the works too? 😉
Now for the rest of dinner…Beth made a really tasty tuna-pasta salad, Court provided carrots and “spicy” Sabra hummus, and then my salad.
Oops, the flash kind of bleached out the tuna salad and hummus 😦
For dessert, Margie, or Marge-Dog as we love to call her, brought some brownies she made, YUM! I hadn’t had a brownie in a while and this really hit the spot 🙂
I ended up going back for another 1/2, plus some Peppermint tea, and a few handfuls of these bad boys:

When I got to the point where I felt like I might be overdoing it, I chugged some water and popped in a piece of minty gum. Works every time! Almost…hehe.

I knew I would be running before lunch today so I ate a lighter breakfast and packed a mid-morning snack (on non-run days, I would just eat a bigger breakfast to hold me until lunch time). I hadn’t had a bar in a while, since I am trying to reduce my dependence on processed foods, but today I made an exception.
I’m not the world’s biggest fan of white chocolate (except for when it comes to Reindeer chow, haha) mostly because it lacks the antioxidants that are found in dark and even some milk chocolate. But every now and then is okay.
I grabbed this at Whole Foods a while back because I’d heard a couple of people rave about it on their blogs. Plus I ilke trying new flavors of stuff. I used to be on a HUGE Lunar bar kick and then, once I’d tried all the flavors, I just wasn’t excited anymore. But I do get the occasional craving for one, especially chocolate — at least their bars have some vitamins and minerals as opposed to a candy bar!
Speaking of which, I was reading through the list and I couldn’t help but notice. No Vitamin D! Hmm. Does anyone with more vitamin knowledge know why that might be? It contains 35% of daily calcium. Isn’t this the bar for women? WOMEN NEED VITAMIN D!
Anyway, stepping off the soap box, this bar was pretty good. It didn’t taste quite like the rice krispie treat I had expected but I liked it enough that I would buy it again. I want to try the Clif version now too, which I hear even more great things about.
I met Jessica at the gym this morning and decided I was going to run somewhere between 3-5 miles. The training schedule we’re using called for 5, so we decided to do five miles even if we had to walk some of it.
I warmed up for 5 minutes, going just a little over 0.25 mile and then I stepped it up. I started at 4.5 and went up to 5.5 gradually and then back down a bit when I felt I needed to. I could really feel this run in my shins today, something that hardly ever happens. But this is the first time I’d been on this particular treadmill since the race on Saturday and my new shoes. The tread I was on yesterday was in way better shape and actually had some spring to it.
When it comes to indoor running, can a treadmill make or break you?
I also think shoes matter. I finally got some new ones!
I don’t only buy one brand of shoes, I just try on a bunch and pick whatever feels the best to me and is decently priced. My last pair were Adidas, so it looks like I’m moving up in the alphabet! I’m blessed to have a neutral foot strike, so no need to correct pronation. I do prefer the cushiony shoes though. The best way to determine this is to go to a running store (like we have Fleet Feet and Ken Combs here) and have them watch you walk or run on a treadmill to see how your foot strikes the ground. Having the right shoes will make your life a lot easier, trust me.
I ended up running for 3 miles straight and then I walked for a bit to drink some water and cool down my body temp. I get really hot when I run (heart rate must’ve been high) and the hot gym doesn’t help. After I finished the rest of the mile, I began jogging again and managed to run another mile.
So in total, I ran 4 miles and walked 1.33 (half was warm up/cool down).
Distance: 5.33 miles
I really need a heart rate monitor, have I told you lately? Hah. That needs to go on the birthday list I guess. I’ve got a couple months.
Afterward, I stretched a TON. Hopefully I’ll have enough energy to do a quick yoga download before bed tonight.
Anyway, I feel really good about things. I have a week and a half until the next race, so 6.2 miles doesn’t seem so unrealistic now. My knees and feet hurt a bit and I’m awfully tired now but I think that’s just my food digesting. I’m looking forward to girl’s night tonight, I may have to show up in some comfy pants 😉
