Happy Saturday friends!
Just thought I would check in before Mari sends out a search party, haha. How are you all?
This week was just a bit too crazy for me. I had my photo shoot, anniversary, etc. and ended up staying home from work yesterday because I was exhausted and started getting headaches. But after lots of naps and sleeping until 9:15 today (unheard of!) I am feeling much better and ready to make this a productive weekend 🙂
On Wednesday, I met the stylist at a very cute place in the Highlands called Pitaya. There are a few other locations but you can also check them out online, they have some seriously cute clothes (that I couldn’t afford right now, haha).
Here are my two favorites from what I tried on. The stylist ended up picking out something totally different for the actual shoot though, which I have no idea how it looks since there weren’t any full length mirrors, so I guess we’ll all be in suspsense until September!
I loved this dress because it is my favorite color, plus the belt gives me more of a waist and it makes some other things look bigger too 😉
This is what I was supposed to wear before the last minute switch…remember, this is a “business woman” magazine.
I loved this one too, I would go back and buy it if I could. Someday!
For breakfast this morning, I had 1/2 cup Quaker oats (got a HUGE 42 oz container at Walmart for $2!) cooked in the micro with 1/2 cup plain light soymilk and 1/4 cup water, added some wheat germ, and topped with chocolate chips, PB and dates.
I am trying to use up all of my fruit and dried fruit since I’m going to try and cut back on sugar. I think I’m still going to have one piece of fruit a day (most likely a banana in my oats!) and then strive to get my other nutrients from veggies.
I can’t wait to finally get started! I think doing it slowly might be better though 😉
I have a short day today because I have a doctor’s appointment this afternoon! So its likely that I will be back later for a separate lunch post from home 🙂
Breakfast this morning was a downright repeat. But I’m happy to say we’ve used up all the bagels (and bananas!) in the fridge and its getting more and more empty, which is good because we’re leaving for New York early Saturday morning!
At the gym this morning, I ran two miles. I wanted to do more but I’m trying not to wear myself out and I was short on time yet again. I’m thinking if the weather is okay I might take the doggie on a long walk this afternoon. We’ll see! Lots of other stuff on the to do list.
Distance: 2.12 miles
For a mid-morning snack, I brought this Quaker True Delights bar I got in the mail as a sample. It looks delicious and I’ve heard rave reviews about it from other bloggers so I can’t wait to dig in!
Check it out: Tina @ Carrots ‘n Cake is giving away Pure Bars! I have never tried them but I hope to soon. Yay, more giveaways 🙂
See you all later!
Gina over at The Fitnessista is giving away a special package from Quaker! Who doesn’t love giveaways?!
It includes a robe and slippers made from organic materials and some of their all natural “Simple Harvest” chewy granola bars!
Go check out her blog and enter for yourself 😉 And congratulate her on her husband’s recent return!
Today’s breakfast was last night’s leftovers! I was going to save this for another day since I don’t like to eat the same things back to back, but it saved me a lot of time and it was really good, so I’m glad I did it. Everything is the same as yesterday except no grits (although Courtney did give me a package to take home with me for later, yay, thanks girl!). I seriously didn’t know I liked grits until last year. I just never tried them, I’d always heard they were bad for you. Another one of those misconceptions from my youth. They aren’t high in fiber like oats, but they do contain some vitamins and minerals worth getting. Including 45% of your daily Iron!
Here is the kind we had:
Apparently, there are lots of other flavors, but I liked this one fine. They kind of remind me of mashed potatoes in a way only as a breakfast food 🙂 I was also pleased that even for instant, they have very few ingredients:
SPECIALLY PROCESSED DEGERMINATED WHITE CORN GRITS, SALT, CALCIUM CARBONATE, REDUCED IRON, NIACIN*, BHT AND CITRIC ACID (AS PRESERVATIVES), THIAMIN MONONITRATE*, RIBOFLAVIN*, FOLIC ACID*.
*ONE OF THE B VITAMINS
And the nutritionals aren’t bad either…

Anyway, back to today!
Here is my agenda for today:
- Anatomy & Physiology class
- Meet Jessica for run at 4:30 (probably just do 1-2 miles)
- Meet Aleta for dinner at Taco Bueno
This will be my first time trying out Taco Bueno, so I’m excited. Anyone ever been there? I’ve heard its like Taco Bell, only a little bit better. My husband didn’t care much for it, but he’s a creature of habit and doesn’t like to break out of his ordinary too often. His favorite place is probably Taco Tico, which I have to say, is pretty dang good, remembering my experience there!
Time to get to it…Happy Thursday!
My lunch lasted me about 4 hours yesterday! I really think choosing to bulk up my breakfast and lunch has been beneficial. Eating more during the day does seem to keep me from going overboard at night. I know when I go lightly all day, I am ravenous at night, hello tortilla chips! 😉
When I got hungry, I dug into my Whole Soy & Co strawberry yogurt. Sadly, this wasn’t as good as I remembered…
It tasted good (blueberry & cherry vanilla are my favorites though) but it was very runny and when I was done eating it, I knew it wasn’t going to work for holding me off until I could eat a snack during my evening class. It has 7 grams of protein but it just didn’t help 😦
Luckily, around 4:00, I had this to bail me out!
And it worked like a charm! I suppose if I have the soy yogurt again, I need to use an add-in like nuts or cereal to give it some more power?
Dinner was another weird mixture. Apparently, I crave beans & rice on Mondays, haha…I made a cup of the Minute brown rice, topped it with 1/2 cup black beans, cooked some Italian style veggies on the side and then had two little squares of wheat-oat bread with Smart Balance.
It was great!
After some housework (no, I didn’t do the dishes after all, haha), I sat down to watch the 2-hour episode of “24” this week and man was it intense! It’s pretty much one of the only shows I watch anymore, mostly because its time spent with my husband 🙂 I love Kiefer Sutherland too. Doesn’t hurt.
Around 9, I felt a snack coming on, so I made a cup of orange herbal tea and ate a piece of my Ghiradelli dark chocolate:
It was really good but my stomach needed a real snack, so a little while later, I had a Quaker Apple Cinnamon rice cake…
That did the trick!
Before bed, I did about 25 minutes of yoga, just doing my own flow of moves that I have burned into my brain (down/up dog, child’s pose, sun salutes, tree pose, triangle, warriors, half moon, and of course Savasana) which ended up being pretty great. But its better for me to be more structured, so I think tonight I will use a DVD program again.
Hope your Monday was fabulous!
p.s. I accidentally went meat-free yesterday, haha. It’s funny when that happens unintentionally 🙂
Product Review: Quaker Rice Cakes – Apple Cinnamon
I got these as a snack idea from a friend at work who assured me that the first ingredient was whole grain brown rice, very few other ingredients and certainly no HFCS or hydrogenated anything. I love it when other people are conscious about the same things as me in foods 🙂
I had a coupon anyway, so I purchased a package of them and tried my first one with 1/2 tbsp of peanut butter spread on top (per my friend’s suggestion). It makes for a very light and tasty snack, without being overly sweet or filling. They make a very good dessert or a snack between meals. I have also just tried them plain and they were very good. I think I had a certain idea about rice cakes from the old days when that’s what women who were dieting ate and it tasted like cardboard.
Each cake has just 50 calories, 3 grams of sugar, no fat or sodium. Now, some of the other rice cake “products” that have icings drizzled on them, you are going to find trans fat (meh). But these are safe! They even contain natural apple & cinnamon flavors, wow. I can’t wait to try some other flavors!
My friend says the chocolate ones with PB is the best! Might have to look into that 😉 And other ways to eat the apple cinnamons…
Also, check out the pics of the Kashi Pumpkin Pie bar! I used that as a mid-morning snack on Friday and it powered me through a tough treadmill workout. I just love the Kashi products, don’t you? The layer of pumpkin on top is the best part 🙂
Friday night, I did end up getting the grilled chicken salad from Impellizeri’s like I’d planned, plus 2 tiny baked mushrooms (w/cheese) as an appetizer. I didn’t even feel deprived, the salad was quite large and very filling…the chicken was warm and seasoned, so much better than lots of other grilled chicken salads I’ve had (McDonald’s, ick).
After dinner, we headed to the grocery store, then came home to watch a movie (“Hancock”…started out good, got boring and weird toward the end, had its funny moments) during which I had an apple cinnamon cake with PB and some good ol’ hot tea. I love that I seem to have control of my nighttime snacking now, its the best feeling.
This is a product I have been looking for quite a while now. I happened to be at Meijer last week (which is now carrying some awesome Greek Yogurts!) and I found the Pure Protein Hot ‘n Healthy Oatmeal Squares in their vitamin/nutrition section.
I was so excited to try these because I had seen them on the blogs and they seemed to be like a healthier version of the Oatmeal to Go squares (which I used to love until I learned they contain partially hydrogenated oil and HFCS, come on Quaker!).
I tried two flavors of the Pure Protein squares…Chocolate Chip and Banana Nut.
For more views, please refer to my post from February 20th because for some reason, I haven’t figured out why some pictures will not load on here if they are certain file types. Any pointers?
Here are some factoids from the Pure Protein website:
Introducing the next addition to the Pure Protein Brand, Hot ‘n Healthy™ Oatmeal Squares! These delicious Oatmeal Squares have 10 grams of protein, taste great hot or cold, and are a good source of fiber and Omega 3’s.
– 10 g protein
– Tastes great hot or cold
– Good source of fiber, protein, Omega-3
As far as taste goes, I definitely preferred the Chocolate Chip bar; I think the banana nut just tasted too fake to me, whether it was or not.
I really liked the overall consistency and chewiness of the bar but I could’ve done without the frosting on the top, especially on the chocolate chip one which was sweet enough thanks to the chocolate.
I used both of these bars as a snack and even though they contained protein and fiber, neither one held me for as long as I would’ve liked. Of course, it could’ve just been because I wasn’t eating well the rest of the time and completely unrelated to the product.
I ate the banana nut bar cold (well, room temperature) but I chose to use the heating option for the chocolate chip bar, which made it warm, soft and melted the chips a little bit (yum).
I do think I would buy these again but only every once in a while since they contain some sugar alcohols and have a somewhat lengthy ingredients list.
They were only $1 a piece.
I hope to find the Cinnamon Roll flavor, which I have a feeling would be my favorite if I could try it.
