Wildwood Probiotic Soyogurt

Before I gave up dairy products, I was a big fan of Greek yogurt because it was high in protein and contained very little sugar (I stuck to the plain variety). Ever since I became vegan, I have been struggling to find a non-dairy yogurt that met my high standards. And I have tried a lot of them!

Most of the flavored soy yogurts (and even some plain, like Whole Soy & Co) I have tried have sugar grams at least in the double digits (some even in the 20’s). I’ve tried just about every brand of soy yogurt on the market.

I even tried coconut milk yogurt but I really did not care for it at all. Since my last container of plain soy yogurt ran out, I had sort of given up and decided to take a break from yogurt for a while.

But then I found another brand, Wildwood, at a local health food store and I knew I had to give it a try.

The first flavor I had was blueberry (16g sugar):

This one was pretty good. A bit on the sweet side but I felt that it went very well with my blueberry granola 🙂

Then strawberry (17g sugar):

This one was okay too, just as sweet as the blueberry, maybe a little moreso. You know how when you eat really sweet yogurt it sort of stays with you (like an aftertaste)? Yeah.

I also tried the vanilla, which managed to escape the camera. It was actually sweeter than the first two flavors I tried (21g sugar, good Lord). I didn’t care much for this one at all, it was pretty overwhelming. I was surprised it had more sugar than the other two.

And then finally…drumroll please…

This is THE BEST SOY YOGURT I’VE EVER HAD which contains just 4g sugar and 6g protein! I apparently saved the best for last. It was so creamy and to me tasted even better than the overpowering sweetness of the other three flavors.

This is my perfect vegan yogurt. It also boasts 5g fiber!

I am beyond thrilled. I had heard of this product before but I did not know anywhere in Louisville sold this brand since they don’t seem to carry it at Whole Foods (although they do have Wildwood Probiotic drinks there). I sort of found it by accident one leisurely Saturday while out shopping!

But I will be making more trips to Amazing Grace to pick up some more of this stuff. I can’t wait to make overnight oats with it 😉

Early workout

Since I skipped my run last night, I decided to hit the gym first thing in the morning!

By 7:15, I had gotten in  a 3 mile run, which works out not just for my schedule but believe it or not, the weather has been a bit on the hot side!

Before I left home, I had half a pita with almond butter.

Even though I trying to just eat enough for my workout, I was kind of hungry still, so I had half a banana which did the trick.

Sorry it’s so dark, it was rather early this morning!

After my run, I refueled with this delicious Odwalla beverage that I will be buying again in the future (when it’s on sale, ha ha).

You gotta love a drink that tastes like a fruit smoothie, yet in addition contains things like wheat grass and Jerusalem artichokes. Plus no added sugar! Love it.

Today was another day without coffee. I don’t know what has gotten into me but I just don’t want it. Hmm…I did have two cups of tea though.

And some edamame for a snack later in the morning.

For lunch, I had leftover refried beans from last night on a salad, only I totally forgot to bring the rest of my avocado! I was so bummed. But luckily I found some leftover salsa in the fridge which helped spice things up a bit 😉

Finished off by a juicy delicious orange. I have found that eating a piece of fruit with lunch not only makes lunch more filling, but totally satisfies any sweet cravings I get so there isn’t a need to hit the vending machine or go on the hunt for chocolate.

When I started writing this post, I had just finished eating my afternoon snack. This is my last soy yogurt for a while.

I bought a bunch of them when they were on sale but I’m doing a challenge in May (details soon) that this will not fit in with because of the added sugar.

That being said, the peach flavor was really good! I believe this was my first time having it, in a while at least.

I’ve got one lined up for May that is food related and I’m thinking up one for June that is fitness related. Challenges really help keep me motivated and focused on my overall goal, which is to live the healthiest and happiest life possible 😉

Hungry runner

This little guy (think it was a possum) was sitting outside our building this morning when I came into work. I’d seen it once before on the other side of campus!

I tried to get him to turn around but he couldn’t hear me tapping on the glass (I so would not have taken this if there weren’t glass between us, ha ha). I never thought I’d say this about a possum, but it was cute 😉

Breakfast this morning was oats in a jar again!

I snacked on some chips, fruit and veggies at a work party. Then a couple hours later it was lunch time!

These soups were on sale at Whole Foods this weekend. I can’t remember if I’d already had it before but I decided to try it anyway.

The soup was delicious! I loved the chunks of carrots in there too.

I snacked on this yogurt + granola to fuel me for my accidental 5 mile run this afternoon!

When I got home, I made Happy Herbivore’s refried bean cakes for dinner.

I topped a few of these with some spicy salsa and had some veggies and a slice of toast with Smart Balance on the side.

A little while after dinner, I was hungry again thanks to running so much today!

I decided to make exactly what I was craving…a mini serving of oats with dark chocolate dreams 🙂

Thankfully that seemed to do the trick, plus lots of water. I’m ready for some tea and Jack Bauer now!

Is there an animal people usually see as gross or scary that you think is cute?

Spicing it up

Breakfast this morning was something you’ve seen many times before. It NEVER gets old.

But my afternoon snack was a quasi-rarity.

I keep yogurt rare because of the sugar content.

For dinner tonight, I spiced up an old favorite…Mama Pea’s chickpeas!

Instead of using the pumpkin spices, I used 2 tsp of curry powder for a different effect. Sort of a sweet and spicy?

They tasted amazing but of course you can’t go wrong with chickpeas in my opinion.

To continue the chickpea theme, I had some pita and hummus on the side (x2). I also had some mixed veggies from the freezer.

Today was a great day of eating for me. Once again I find myself really thankful for my self-imposed 9 o’clock cut off time.

But I also nixed the mindless nighttime snacking by giving myself a job to do…I finally put away all the Christmas stuff!

If you are a nighttime snacker like me, what tricks do you use to keep yourself from overdoing it?

Dessert for breakfast

I’m a big fan of eating breakfast for dinner. I’m also apparently a fan of dessert for breakfast 🙂

Oats, flaxseed meal, peanut butter and chocolate chips. Word.

My lunch was pretty filling but boring so I left it out today. Just a veggie burger and some veggies. See what I mean?

My snack this afternoon was pretty impressive though. I hadn’t had yogurt for a while and this one has the lowest sugar content of a non-dairy vanilla yogurt I have found so far.

The granola was given to me by the lovely Miss Vegan Crunk. It was made by a friend of hers and I’m not just saying this…best granola I’ve ever had.

My run today was totally awesome.

So was dinner!

I baked up some tofu, steamed some veggies and finished it off with some toast and Smart Balance Light (vegan).

I also made being at home kind of special and made a pitcher of iced tea. It was really good (especially with a real lemon slice) but it made me want summer to be here, like yesterday!

For “dessert” I had some tea and a tablespoon of peanut butter.

One of my goals for the New Year is to get more sleep. I rested so much over my break from work that I didn’t even realize how tired I was before.

To get 8 hours, it means going to bed at 10:00. Which will help me with avoiding mindless nighttime snacking as I like to not eat an hour before bed.

Today was a really good day. I’m back in the routine and it feels so good!

I’ve only got 20 minutes to go, so goodnight 🙂

Technical TV difficulties

Good evening friends! Right now I should be watching the new 90210 but that channel decided to go all wonky here and they are showing “The Golden Age of Country” infomercial…what?!

Anyway, no big deal, perhaps it is God’s way of telling me not to waste time on television, ha ha. I hardly watch anything now, so why not just stop it all?

For breakfast this morning, I had a nice bowl of 5 grain cereal with peanut butter and a sliced banana. Perfection.

I’m so excited I figured out that close-up setting on my camera, I can tell a big difference in my pictures now 🙂

Mid-morning, I skipped my walk (busy and rainy out) but snacked on some more soy yogurt, just plain this time.

This was pretty good but I like the strawberry better. I still have four more to eat before September 29th so expect to see these a lot!

Before lunch, I hit the gym for another workout with my girl Farrah. First, we ran a mile outside (sweaty and humid) that was totally awesome…I told her “I must’ve eaten my Wheaties today” because it was the best one mile run I’d had in a while. I felt fast and it felt easy. I think I’m getting the hang of this again.

Afterwards, we came back in and did lots of weights, focusing mainly on triceps with a bunch of bicep, shoulder and lat exercises worked in. We also did a few ab moves too. I love how our workout is different almost every time!

For lunch, I had leftover tofu from last night (left) and leftover Baba Ghanouj with pita from Sunday’s lunch at Zaytun’s (right). So so good.

Lunch was definitely my favorite meal of the day…or was it?

Later in the afternoon I had some tea and some mixed nuts that totally escaped the camera, oops!

After work, I was supposed to meet my friend Candy for a walk but she had to cancel due to injury. I hope she heals soon, she said she should be good to go in a couple of days.

But it worked in our favor because right at about 7:00, when we would’ve been a mile from home, a huge rain/thunderstorm rolled through. Thank you Lord for lookin’ out 😉

For dinner, I decided to try something I’d never made at home before:

I picked up this box over the weekend for $2.99 at Kroger. It seemed a little high at first but it was totally worth it because I have three more servings in my fridge for the rest of the week!

I followed the instructions on the box for broiling instead of frying because that just made more sense to me. I’m not a fryer!

Dipped the falafel in hummus and the potatoes in organic ketchup. It really doesn’t get much better than that. The falafel was good, just a bit dry, I think I could’ve added more water to the mix. But they were still delicious and I had to pack the leftovers away before I ate them all…just kidding.

I did some household chores in a jiff because I thought I had to hurry to watch 90210 at 8:00 but since it never came on, I’m free to just relax the rest of the night. Along with some tea and dark chocolate.

Here is the chocolate I eat. It’s vegan and pretty low in sugar. And this box has lasted me forever, totally worth it. One “coin” has 30 calories and one is usually enough for me…bonus!

I might hit the hay early and try to get in a run before work? We’ll see! Hoping it’s not raining at 6 a.m. tomorrow 🙂

Cold and flu season

Good evening everyone! Thank you for your comments on my previous post on how I got back on track. I appreciate all of you guys! 🙂

I hope this post finds you having a glorious day and in the best of health.

Over here in our household, we have a sick dude. Josh is coming down with a cold or something, his sinuses are a mess and he’s feeling icky and  lethargic. I hope he feels better soon. But I’m kind of avoiding him so I don’t get the germs.

I haven’t had a cold or any illness since August 2008 and I don’t want to break that streak. I thought I was coming down with something about a month ago, but I fought it off.

In the spirit of cold and flu season, I got my flu shot today!

My work offers flu shots for free, so I jumped at the chance. I guess I have been getting flu shots every year for the last 5 or 6 years. I got the flu a couple times as a kid and once as a teenager and it was miserable enough to convince me I had to do it!

I am not sure yet if I will get the H1N1 shot, if it is even available to me. It’s just so new, I’m afraid of what could go wrong. Hmm…

Do you get a flu shot? Why or why not?

For breakfast this morning, I fueled up on something that has been missing from my diet for quite some time…THE GREEN MONSTER!

This GM contained: 1 cup of unsweetened original Almond Breeze, 2 big handfuls of spinach, 1 frozen & chopped banana, and 1 tbsp of peanut butter. Yum yum. Oh, how I had missed these 😉

Mid morning, I ate some nuts and then took a short walk (to get my shot).

After lunch, I had my usual tea and dark chocolate. Then I went to go take my first Exercise Science exam, eek. I think I did ok, but I could’ve done better. Oh well, something to improve on!

For my afternoon snack, I had some Stonyfield O’Soy yogurt (small package from the 6-pack) with some Ezekiel golden flax cereal on top.

I chose the small containers because I got 6 for $1.99! Plus this little bitty thing already has 13 grams of sugar, wow.

It was tasty though and I’m comfortable with including it in my diet for now 🙂

After work, I hit the gym hoping to get in a run but all the treadmills were taken! I guess that is a good problem though. At least people are using them.

I ended up doing 30 minutes on the elliptical and it definitely gave me a run for my money! Afterwards, I stretched for almost 15 minutes and it felt so good to take the time and really take care of my body.

When I got home, I was so hungry, so I snacked on some more nuts (no picture). Then I got to work on dinner.

Josh and I had some red potatoes at a cookout on Labor Day and ever since then I’ve been craving them and he was open to trying them at home 🙂

I drizzled 1 tbsp of canola oil and sprinkled salt and pepper on top of the potatoes.

I had a hard time figuring out the cooking part. I cooked them in the oven at 425 for nearly 30 minutes but they weren’t quite done so I ended up microwaving them for a few out of impatience.

But once they were done, they were good!

I’m off to watch “Dancing with the Stars” which is not a show I usually watch but I have to this season because Chuck Liddell is on! He is one of my favorite UFC fights. I just watched his first dance and it wasn’t too bad…I hope he can hang on a few more weeks 🙂

Aaron Carter looks good too, he was looking a bit rough there a couple years back, I’m glad he seems to have gotten himself together. It was cool to see the old Backstreet Boys in the crowd too!

I better get back to the tv. I also have a cup of peppermint tea in my future.
